Without a paycheck, the quickest legitimate help usually shows up on an EBT card or as a credit on a utility bill. Expedited SNAP has to reach your card within 7 days, and a LIHEAP crisis payment has to stop a shutoff within 48 hours. A call to 2-1-1 can turn up the local fund that still has money this month. Selling or pawning something covers whatever gap is left, and borrowing comes last.

Everything below is sorted that way: help you never repay, then cash you can raise from what you own, then debt. The figures are for the federal fiscal year that runs from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027.

Call 2-1-1 before anything else

Dial 2-1-1 from any phone, or search by zip code at 211.org. The person who answers works from a local database of rent, utility, food and transportation programs, and the useful part is that they know which church fund or county emergency grant still has money left this month. Those pots open and close constantly. The 211 network says it made more than 19 million referrals in 2025, and 9.1 million of them were for housing, homelessness and utility bills, which tells you what most callers are asking about.

Ask specifically about your Community Action Agency. These local agencies, funded partly through the federal Community Services Block Grant, run emergency rent and utility help in much of the country and often take LIHEAP applications in the same visit. Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and St. Vincent de Paul branches also pay bills directly in many areas, though what each branch offers depends entirely on its budget.

Food money within a week: expedited SNAP

A household with no income gets the maximum SNAP benefit. For fiscal year 2027 in the 48 contiguous states and DC, that’s $306 a month for one person, $562 for two, $808 for three and $1,023 for four, according to the USDA’s FY 2027 cost-of-living memo dated August 21, 2026. Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and the Virgin Islands have their own, higher tables.

Normal SNAP processing can take up to 30 days. The faster route is expedited service, and the federal rule at 7 CFR 273.2(i) says benefits have to be on your EBT card no later than the seventh calendar day after you file. The first test is the familiar one, gross monthly income under $150 and no more than $100 in cash and bank accounts. The second way in gets missed more often. You also qualify if your gross monthly income plus your liquid savings comes to less than your rent or mortgage plus utilities. So a laid-off worker with $400 coming in this month, $200 in checking and a $1,100 rent bill fails the first test and passes the second, because $600 is less than $1,100 before you even add the electric bill. If the caseworker doesn’t screen you for expedited service, ask for it by name.

Apply through your state’s SNAP office; USA.gov’s SNAP page links to each state. For food today, a pantry is quicker. Feeding America’s food bank locator finds the regional food bank that supplies pantries near you, and many of those pantries hand out groceries the same day with little paperwork.

How fast can LIHEAP stop a shutoff?

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program pays heating and cooling bills, and you don’t repay it. Regular LIHEAP benefits move at the speed of your state’s office, but crisis help has a federal clock on it. Under 42 U.S.C. 8623(c), once an eligible household applies for crisis benefits, the program has to provide help that resolves the crisis within 48 hours, or within 18 hours if the situation is life threatening. A disconnection notice in January counts. So does an empty propane tank.

Find your state office on the federal LIHEAP page or call the National Energy Assistance Referral line at 1-866-674-6327. The same federal page warns that LIHEAP never charges a fee and doesn’t give grants directly to individuals through texts or calls. A message offering you a “LIHEAP grant” for a processing fee is a scam, and HHS asks you to report it to its fraud hotline at 1-800-447-8477.

Four cards: expedited SNAP must reach the EBT card within 7 days, LIHEAP crisis help within 48 hours, or 18 hours if life threatening, and the fiscal year 2027 SNAP maximum for four people is 1,023 dollars a month

Unemployment and TANF

If you lost the job through no fault of your own, file an unemployment claim with the state where you worked the day you can. CareerOneStop’s unemployment benefits finder links to every state’s filing site. Benefit amounts, waiting weeks and the rules for people who quit vary by state, and our guide to benefits you can claim with no income walks through the filing order in more detail.

Families with children can apply for TANF, the cash program each state runs with federal money from the Office of Family Assistance. States set their own amounts. When you apply, ask whether your state has a diversion payment, a one-time lump sum for a specific crisis like a car repair or a security deposit. It’s usually faster than monthly TANF, but ask what you give up, because some states limit monthly TANF for a while after a diversion payment.

Raising cash from what you already own

Selling something you don’t need creates no debt and no interest. On Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp, tools, furniture and game consoles often go to a local buyer the same day. Mail-in electronics buyback sites pay more slowly, after they inspect the item.

A pawn loan is the next step down. You hand over the item, walk out with cash worth a fraction of its resale value, and get it back when you repay. There’s no credit check, and if you can’t pay, the shop keeps the item and that ends it. There’s no collections account and no lawsuit. The fees are steep and capped by state law, but your downside stops at the thing you pledged, which is more than you can say for a payday loan.

Plasma centers pay donors, often on a prepaid card, with higher rates for new donors. The first visit includes a health screening and takes a few hours. Gig apps like DoorDash and Instacart can pay out the same day once you’re approved, but the background check alone can take days, so they’re a second-week answer.

If you still have to borrow

Before borrowing, call every creditor with a bill due this month and ask for a hardship deferral or a smaller payment; it costs nothing and it works best before the account goes late. If that still leaves a gap, our guide to legal ways to borrow money without a credit check compares credit union payday alternative loans, pawn loans and the other options that don’t need a paycheck.

Table of where to look first by amount needed: under 100 dollars food pantry, 2-1-1 and selling small items; 100 to 500 dollars pawn loan, plasma, selling electronics; 500 to 2,000 dollars Community Action Agency, LIHEAP crisis help, TANF diversion, credit union PAL; 2,000 to 10,000 dollars secured or personal loan or 401(k) loan; any amount, a hardship deferral
Amount neededWhere to look first
Under $100Food pantry, 2-1-1 referral, selling small items
$100 to $500Pawn loan, plasma donation, selling electronics
$500 to $2,000Community Action Agency, LIHEAP crisis help, TANF diversion payment, credit union PAL
$2,000 to $10,000Secured or personal loan, 401(k) loan if your plan allows it
Any amountHardship deferral from the creditor, so the bill shrinks instead of you finding the cash

A 401(k) loan is capped by the IRS at the lesser of $50,000 or the greater of $10,000 or half your vested balance. Many plans won’t lend to someone who has left the employer, and a loan you already had when you left can be offset against your account and taxed as a distribution unless you roll that amount over by your tax filing deadline.

Scams aimed at people who need money fast

Any lender that wants a fee before it releases the money is the classic advance-fee loan scam, and the FTC’s advice is to walk away. Legitimate lenders take fees out of the loan or add them to the balance.

Fake checks are the other one. Someone sends you a check for a job or a sale, asks you to deposit it and send part back, and by the time the bank finds out it’s fake you owe the full amount. The FTC’s fake check guide points out that money showing up in your account doesn’t mean the check cleared, and a bad check can take weeks to be discovered.

Payday and single-payment car title loans are legal in many states but brutal without income. The CFPB says a typical two-week payday loan with a $15 fee per $100 works out to an APR of almost 400%. Borrow $300 and you owe $345 in two weeks, and if you can only cover the $45 fee to roll it over, you’re paying $45 every two weeks and still owe the $300.

What to do this week

  1. Today: call 2-1-1, file your unemployment claim, and call any creditor with a bill due before the end of the month.
  2. Today or tomorrow: apply for SNAP and ask to be screened for expedited service. If there’s a shutoff notice, apply for LIHEAP crisis help at the same time.
  3. This week: visit a food pantry, list anything you can sell, and apply for Medicaid and, if you have kids, TANF.
  4. Only after that: compare borrowing options, starting with a credit union.
